179D Tax Deductions for Architects and Engineers in 3 Simple Steps
Blue Energy has used our reliable, efficient 3-step process to give our clients confidence in their 179D tax deductions. We don't outsource any of our work - from feasability studies to energy modeling and site visits - which saves clients time and maximizes deductions.
1. Complimentary 179D Feasibility Study
The first part of our process is a Complimentary Feasibility Study. At no charge, we will evaluate all of your buildings that contain an energy efficient system to determine their potential of qualifying for a 179D tax deduction. Our feasibility studies are usually completed within 48 hours of receiving your system information.
2. 179D Energy Modeling & Calculation of Savings
Given a favorable feasibility study, a contract with Blue Energy can initiate the next steps of an energy study of the building(s), and an energy model to determine the reduction of the energy and power costs as compared to the ASHRAE 90.1-2001 or ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline building.
3. Certification Required for 179D Tax Deductions
Once the savings are known, we do our own site visit to the building (instead of outsourcing the site visit) to verify the information that was used to create the energy model. Upon completion of the site visit, the building will be certified according to the IRS guidelines. The final report and certification is then delivered to the client.

Who Receives 179D Tax Deductions and Direct Pay for IRA Tax Credits?
179D Tax Deductions and IRA Tax Credits for Commercial Building Owners
Under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct), owners of commercial buildings with energy-efficient systems (built or retrofitted since 12/31/2005) can directly earn Section 179D tax deductions, allowing them to fully deduct the expense of the energy efficiency systems, subject to a cap. Eligible building systems are lighting, HVAC and building envelope.
The IRS requires an independent, third party energy tax study and certification in order to claim this deduction, which Blue Energy provides through the process of precise energy studies and energy modeling to calculate the energy savings achieved for the building. All of our certification standards follow strict IRS guidelines and procedures.

179D Tax Deductions and IRA Tax Credits for Architects, Engineers and Designers of Municipal Buildings
Since government-operated agencies of municipal buildings (such as public schools and offices) don't pay taxes, the 179D tax deductions for energy efficiency systems in these buildings can be allocated to the architects, engineers and design firms that designed and installed the systems.

This deduction applies to qualifying projects in the year that the project was completed.
179D Tax Deductions and IRA Tax Credits to ESCOs for Municipal Buildings
Similar to the eligibility of architects, engineers and design firms to be allocated the 179D tax deductions for energy efficiency systems in government-owned buildings, Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and performance contractors who design and install the energy efficiency projects and systems. Elibility and requirements are the same as for the architects and engineers, such that the tax deductions are not extended to the labor businesses and individuals who provide installation and maintenance.
